BACK PAIN – example of osteopathic care

APPROACHES.

Different osteopathic techniques can be used to treat the client suffering from back pain, depending on the origin of the discomfort. And since in many cases several causes together contribute to neck, back, or lumbar pain, very often the osteopath will use more than one technique within a session. He will be able to use both structural and visceral approaches, as well as cranial osteopathy, or the revival of vital energy. Healing involves several levels.

• Structural; that is, joints, muscle chains, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and all biomechanics in general.
• Visceral; i.e. viscera and organs in general (liver, lung, heart, kidney, spleen, stomach, intestine, colon, ovary, uterus, etc.), their congestion, adhesions, ptoses, tensions, etc.
• Cranial, i.e. the bones of the skull and face (more than twenty), their sutures, the membranes (meninges, including the dura mater) that connect them and compartmentalize the cranial volume, cavities, sinuses, brain masses, etc.
• Vital energy; i.e. the energy of the body, its electricity, the energy body, the circuits on which this energy circulates, its roads, its crossroads, its grid.

TREAT BACK PAIN; THE GLOBALITY

The osteopath is a holistic therapist. Whether the consultation is for sciatica pain, torticollis, lumbar sprain, herniated disc, arthritis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, nerve pinching, cruralgia, neck pain, or whatever, the osteopath will be interested in the body as a “whole”, globally, and according to the examinations, and his osteopathic diagnosis .

Let’s take an example; If a client consults an osteopath for pain in the lower back, it is possible that within one or a few sessions, and depending on the priorities displayed by the patient’s body, the osteopath;

• Adjusts a disoriented cervical vertebra, as it changes the body’s gravity lines, inducing perverse mechanical stresses in other places of the body, such as the lumbar area.
• Treats a visceral or organ tension (colon, liver, or uterus, etc.) that induces an inclination in the lower back, or a compensation of the pelvis affecting the spine.
• Treats an old injury of the foot, knee, or ankle no longer showing pain locally, but which had forced a transfer of weight to the opposite side of the body, which over time causes a lot of tension in the lumbar region.
• Checks the dura mater system to make sure that these protective membranes of the nervous system do not maintain a blockage in the lower back. Indeed they are a powerful link between the head and the sacrum passing through the spinal canal located in the center of the spine.
• Revives the primary respiratory movement (MRP) in the craniosacral axis so that the “messengers” of the body (hormones, neurotransmitters, nerve signals) produced at the level of the brain go to the various organs and viscera for which they are intended. The harmony of the functions of these organs depends on it. Even in the context of this example, where the client consults for lumbar tensions, this may be concerned.
• Dissipates an energy blockage, which maintains or induces muscle contraction and lumbar or back blockage.
• Restores a circuit of vital energy controlling a disturbed physiological function, and involved with the lumbar tensions of the client of this example.

All this is part of normal osteopathic work , and can vary enormously depending on the osteopath’s assessment , the patient’s condition , and other factors.
